to instagram or not to instagram

….that is the question.

So I’ve been considering doing Instagram on a regular basis. I created an account about 2 1/2 years ago before Instagram was so incredibly popular, but never did anything with it. I’m struggling at the mere thought of joining the ranks of hashtagdom (yeah, it’s a word). Everything has a hashtag these days and it drives me a little batty. It’s kind of out of control, if you ask me. So much so that it makes me not want to do it.

So here are some questions that I’d like to chat about:

  • What do you do?
  • Do you go all hashtag crazy?
  • Do you not include them?
  • How do you feel about Instagram?
  • Do you follow a lot of people or do a lot of people follow you?
  • Do you feel like you waste too much time there?
  • Do you find it helpful?
  • Do you feel like you need to share the photo Facebook as well?
  • If you do both Facebook and Instagram, which do you prefer?

I always felt like Facebook was enough for me. But it’s been kind of funny to hear my kids start talking about my friends–like Lisa Bearnson–because they follow her on Instagram. They may know something about her before I do.  :)

I’d love any insight you have to offer!

I have both facebook and instagram however I am not much of a poster on either one LOL. I like them both for different reasons and I only just recently started using hashtags although sometimes I don’t use them at all. My girls however love instagram and hashtag so much I am always laughing at their hashtags. I have mine set up that only approved people can follow me. I love to see little bits and pieces of peoples lives through instagram. I say just do it Kerri :)

I do Instagram more in the summer than any other time. (Teacher here…so there’s a lot more stuff that happens in the summer vs others times of the year.) I instagrammed my vacation to the beach last year. I love looking at those pics so much. I do hash tag things. I have instaweather and it adds a ton of hash tags on its own. I think it’s fun to search and see what others are posting with the same hash tags. I don’t have a ton of followers and I don’t follow a ton of people myself, just a couple family members and some scrapbookers I like. I’d follow you for sure!

I say, go for it Kerri! Instagram away! Hash tag until your heart’s content because you’re #awesome. :)

I do really enjoy Instagram, but I don’t go super crazy with it. If I take a fun picture that could use a little jazzing up, (or that I think my ‘followers’ aka my ‘family and friends’ will enjoy) I will Instagram it. I do always share to Facebook and Twitter as well, as I have different people who have all or some of those feeds who I would like to share with. When you are clicking to ‘share’ your finished photo to Instagram, you can click to share to those social media feeds at the same time, so it is super simple.

I ALSO like to use other apps before I head to Instagram occasionally, including PicFX, A Beautiful Mess, Diptic, ColorSplash, Bokehful, and Phonto (not all together, but they each do different fun things that Instagram doesn’t).

Hashtags I am in-between about – sometimes I use them, sometimes I don’t. When I do use them they are usually made up ones that pertain to the picture, rather than trying to tie into a major social media one that is ‘current and trendy’ that day.
Hope this helps!

I love Instagram. It is my go-to place for inspiration and encouragement. I follow so many positive & creative people on Instagram! I love my Insta-Friends!

I guess I am the only one who does not do Twitter or Instagram. I do not have time or desire to figure out a new site, even though I have had an account for a long time. I am lucky to get FB done. I check your site due to your FB posts. If you only do Instagram I am know I will miss something fun, but that is the hazards of being old fashion and having only one place to check or (insert faint here)actually taking time to talk on the phone or in person to people.

I have a personal and a business one. My personal one is private and my photography/scentsy/project life one is not. I rarely hashtag unless I want it to show up under something special.

I check FB daily but forget all about Instagram — although my teenaqed daughter loves it.

I love instagram! It’s my most go to app. I love to follow fellow scrapbook’ ers – but must admit I get a bit fed up when they post loads of pics on one day – to promote their stuff. If you do decide to instagram – please don’t go mad with it – 1or 2 a day is fine!

Amy Ulen - June 17, 2013 - 3:28 pm

For purely selfish reasons, I say go for it, because I want to follow you! When I post to Instagram, I do also link it to my FB and Twitter because it’s so easy to do. I also use a plugin on my website that cycles through my Instagram feed.

I do use hashtags, but they have to have a purpose! #peoplewhomakereallylongandlamehashtagshavenopurpose! The goal of a hashtag is to make your images or tweets easy to search. One or two keywords is ideal.

As far as limiting the number of posts per day, I disagree. It depends on your purpose. For instance, I took Stacy Julian’s 12 last year and posted at least 12 photos on the 12th of each month for the entire year. I used those Instagram photos and the journaling (including the hashtags!) on my scrapbook pages. If you went to a trade show or behind the scenes event, as a follower, I would hope you would post lots of photos. Of course, if you are apprehensive about it, just do it for yourself and don’t include it in your marketing plan. That way you won’t feel an obligation to sink a bunch of time into it.

I really got into Instagram when I took a class on it; it was fun to add the class hashtag to it and see what everyone else was doing! My enthusiasm has waived a bit now, but I still enjoy checking the posts of those I follow. I rarely use hashtags otherwise, which makes my teenage daughter roll her eyes because it apparently gets you “more likes” which I could care less about, LOL!

I rarely use Facebook and I find Instagram quick and easy and its a fun addition to my Project Life. Also I love using all the apps to enhance the photos; I think this is the fun part for me.

Its possible that people share more on Instagram than Facebook as its just so easy and convenient, its cool to see snippets of people’s everyday lives.

The only downside really is that you need to keep an eye on who is following you (but its easy to block people); I too get fed up when people only start to follow me so that they can promote their business. They are clearly not interested in my photos.

I also love that my teenage daughter loves Instagram, which means I get to see tons of pictures of her being natural and seeing what is important to her; plus I have access to those photos too, which is a real bonus!

It would be lovely to see you on Instagram!

I love instagram – it’s all about the photos for me! I no longer go to FB unless forced LOL! I just wanted a place to post pictures of things that made me smile and instagram fills that need. I use some hashtags, but I don’t go crazy with it. I’ve “met” some cool people all over the world through sharing pictures and I get to see what daily life looks like all over the world too. I enjoy instagram much more than I ever did FB or Twitter or any other social network.

I do think it is a cool program, my only worry is the copyright issue that they had in the past about ownership, plus Facebook did purchase them awhile back, so privacy issues for me as well.

Jeanine - June 18, 2013 - 3:21 pm

I love Instagram! I have Facebook but it has become a bore because so many people repost the same quotes, etc. all of the time. I love taking pictures and posting them to Instagram. I love looking at pictures other people post. I get a lot of inspiration from those pics. I don’t do the hashtag thing, my Instagram is private. Very rarely do I post the pics from Instagram to Facebook. There are some friends I follow on both FB and Instagram and they post the very same thing to both sites, boring! If you decide to use Instagram, please don’t do that!

I really enjoy Instagram, but I’m not really a hashtagger and I would say that I’m turned off by their overuse. That said, I love sharing what I’m seeing and doing. I love being able to share funny, weird, pretty things. Last week while running errands in a town I’ve lived for a long time I discovered a family of cement elephants. Instagram. Last night (while preparing to move next week) I spent 5 hours going through all my pictures and ripping up all the blurry, under-exposed, unflattering shots…so I took a quick picture of the BAGS of pictures that I had tackled and shared it on Instagram.

And I love seeing things that I probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. My daughter goes to school 4 hours away, so it’s fun getting a glimpse of what she’s up too. My family is 6 hours away, and I love seeing pictures of my goofy niece and nephew. I follow my boyfriend, who sees light like no one else I know and takes gorgeous pictures.

I see Facebook and Instagram as two different things. FB is word/thought based, while Instagram is the visual side. Each one is appropriate for different things. Occasionally I’ll share an Instagram photo on FB, but since most of my “followers” (not a fan of that term) are also my “friends” I don’t want to be redundant.

I probably spend more time on FB – it’s just so much easier to interact there – but I enjoy them equally.

Starting over since I was typing and blank went the screen so if this is repeated twice I’m sorry. YES! love it for the instant photo with great caption. I am not a big hastag person. Its getting over used on every media site and its annoying. I love that foxgrams prints your instagram photos in 3″ and 4″ square photos. I am in love and it comes in the blink of an eye in the mail. They are amazing… Love having he square format to work with.

I starting using Instagram last fall because I liked the frames and effects. I really didn’t care for anyone to see them besides me. I was planning to use the photos in scrapbooks. I stopped using Instagram when the company announced that they could do anything with your photos. While they have backed off of that policy for now, I still have a huge problem with either Instagram or Facebook using my photos for anything. I follow a few people, but I rarely look at Instagram, no time. I would go back to it for the fun of it if I knew that my photos were private.

Nikki - June 19, 2013 - 5:27 pm

I like IG, but I don’t go crazy with the hashtags – sometimes they annoy me when there’s like 10 of them and/or the hashtag is a sentence that I have to read and re-read to figure out. LOL! I enjoy being able to see friends and designers stuff. It is a fun mix.

I say do IG YOUR way! Whatever works for you. :)

Nadia (WithGlitteringEyes.blogspot.com) - June 24, 2013 - 9:09 am

Love Instagram! I have mine set to ‘private’ though because I really only want to share those photos with people I know personally– family and close friends. For that reason, I don’t hashtag– that is really just to get more followers. I find that posts with more than three hashtags are too hard to read, so I never read those comments.

My Facebook page has “friends” that are from all the parts of my life so I find that the posts and pics there are more guarded. Instagram is like freedom!

I follow friends on Instgram, but don’t spend too much time there. Just quick checks, share the love, and to post! I have also enjoyed using a printing service for some of my very favorite Instagrams! (I use Printicular if you are looking for one.)

I think it adds to my creativity and mixes up my photos a bit with the 4×4 orientation and filters.

Best wishes on deciding what you want to do!

I like Instagram. It’s a fun, quick way to share photos. I have mine public but don’t share pictures of my kids at all. I don’t remember to hash tag very often. When I hashtag something broad like #Vegas, I get a lot of views but sometimes I make up stuff to be funny, like a 4-photo pic of my dog following me that I called #StalkerDog. I use the app to post to Twitter (because I don’t really use it for anything else) and Flickr to have an extra place to save the photos.
The only issue I’ve had (with IG AND Twitter) has been that my name is the same as a hip hop singer in New York, and some establishments have tagged me a few times. I cannot sing, and certainly don’t sing hip hop. Lol.
I think it’s fun so I say “Go for it!”
