One Little Word Check In

February 25th, 2015|everyday life|

one-little-word-2015-capture

Do  you ever feel like you’ve lost a spark? I don’t want to say your spark, because I think we all have several sparks inside that appear or are a part of us at random times. But something in the ‘I used to be outgoing’ department seems to have left the building on a temporary basis? Okay, so maybe ‘temporary’ may be more semi-permanent of late. Temporary in dog years?

I don’t know if it’s because I’m feeling like I’m reclusive–in part by lack of transportation and in part by being glued to my work–but I don’t feel the same as I have felt in the past.

Recently I taught The History Project to 50-ish women at our church…and I felt the spark. That tiny little glimmer of being engaged with laughter and conversation and having fun with women I’ve known for a long time…many for 20+ years. I haven’t felt that in a long time. It was especially fun when I even had the resident sweetheart ‘a bit older’ lady doing a little ‘head banging’ (okay, nodding) to some Bohemian Rhapsody. That was delightful.

And last week, I was taking dinner to a sweet friend who’d lost her father. I don’t feel like I’d been out of the house in ages, except for church, much less had driven as far as her house 20 minutes away. It was a beautiful evening. As I stood on the front porch waiting at the other friend’s house who was contributing the dinner, I looked out at the valley in the evening light and just soaked it in.

I definitely don’t get out enough.

Sometimes I look back at old blog posts and feel, ‘Hey, I used to write some fun stuff.’ Sharing more than just the usual work stuff.

Where did that go?

Is it because I’m getting older?

Is it because I’ve lost some spark?

I can’t even watch tv and listen to music like I used to, especially when I work. Quiet or reruns is the only thing that I can handle much of, and that’s not much. And because I do like it quiet, and my house is not with three college students coming and going with school and work, I find myself up on my bed working. (Okay, so maybe I may have flannel pj bottoms on too. It’s so much more comfortable to sit on the bed with those on.)

Wrong place to be and probably wrong things to wear.

I miss that spark that used to be such a big part of me.

I make goals and have all the motivation in the world to capture more of life, but as I look down at one of the many incomplete projects, I think to myself, ‘I’m still in the same rut.’

How do I find the balance between work and life?

Many of you that work at home totally know what I’m talking about.

I want to read. I want to crochet. I want to scrap.

So, in an effort to begin taking my One Little Word to heart, I downloaded the Kindle app to my iPad.

kindle-app

I am going to read. Just adding it to my iPad felt a bit liberating. I feel like if a ‘book’ is at my fingertips now, I will be more inclined to read it. In a couple weeks though when I’m not so busy. Baby steps. ;)

As it starts to get warmer–or stay warmer–I am going to work outside.

I am going to scrap more. I loved making the mini album in this week’s post!

And, I’m going to pull those three lines of crochet, that the ‘resident older lady’ taught me how to do a year and a half ago, out of my bag that’s been sitting by my bed and I am going to work on it instead of my computer–even if it’s just for an hour.

I need to make myself have a life that’s not at the keyboard.

That is not capturing life.

And I need to live my OLW.

That is, after all, why I chose it.

Hello Florida Travel Journal

February 23rd, 2015|pages, projects, stamps, travel|

florida-01

A few weeks ago Zach, Jordan and I went to Florida where Jordan served an LDS mission, which was cut short–and sudden–due to medical issues and it all felt a bit unfinished. Lack of closure and all.  So when I found tickets for $247 round trip from Utah, I knew we needed to go.

For the trip, I knew I wanted to make a little travel journal, in the truest sense of the word  journal. I wanted to quickly document our day-to-day happenings without worrying about a ton a photos. I was out to capture the trip in words so that I could create an actual album later with the mass amounts of photos I’d take.

I took my Instax camera with me and would take one or two photos that day as a little reminder of the moment to put in my journal. Of course, I opted to include a few more ‘Instax’ style photos taken from my iPhone using the Snapshots #3 kit after the fact as well.

My supplies consisted of a sharpie, a date roller stamp, some clear travel-themed and date KBS stamps (Travelogue, Wanderlust, Time Again), a stamp block, black ink, two washi tapes, some paper clips and some enamel dots. I wanted to keep it all simple.

For the album, again, I wanted to keep it simple, yet have some fun. So it was all about the pages. Different pages in different sizes, mediums, cuts, etc.

And when it came time to package it all up, I looked around to see what I could find to put it in. I thought about various boxes or containers, but nothing seemed to fit the bill. Then I glanced down at a box of stuff and saw a Making Memories elements container and could not believe how prefect it was!

florida-20

I seriously could not have planned it better myself. I just put the rest of my accoutrements in a ziploc sandwich bag and tossed them in my purse. Of course, I went out with the ‘left’ and came home with the ‘right’. ;) But still perfect on both counts. I love it when a plan comes together.

bags

So here’s a look at the whole enchilada.

florida-02

The album itself is 5″ w x 5 3/4″ h. It’s a print and cut made from a kraft paper. It’s heavier than paper but not as thick as cardstock. I love this stuff! Kass bought a pack of it at Hobby Lobby for a project and I’m gonna have to buy her some more because I keep stealing it.

I also love, love, love including maps in vacation albums. I love a visual reference for me or anyone looking at where we were.

florida-03

I took a photo of the beach with my Instax, but if I remember my instructions correctly, you’re suppose to use it in above 50 degree temps. It was windy and cold on the beach, so I think they struggled to develop. But still, it kind of produces a fun effect here.

I also used a print+cut tab from Attach It on the photo on the left with Escape to the Ocean cut from vinyl and adhered to a plastic sheet on the opposite side. All cut before hand and taken with on the trip.

florida-04florida-05

I wanted to include at least one envelope for my album to house itty bits of paper, so I used this double sided envelope from the Envelopes kit, cut it as large as I could on a 12×12 paper, and guess what. It was perfect for holding Project Life cards and other fun things.

florida-06florida-07

I also took two pieces of cardstock with good adhesive to use as a binding for the album. Tags make awesome pages in a mini album like this!

florida-08

Since eating gator tail was a monumental occasion, I included a photo of this when I came home. Used Snapshots #3 for that. I’m in love with that kit!

florida-09

I backed some cards with grid or lined paper. I just have a notepad of that stuff–grid on one side, lined on the other. It’s good stuff.

florida-10

Used a receipt image form inFORMS to make this left page. Colors are editable so I could make it match my album. I also used shimmery gold striped Project Life card from Teresa Collins.

florida-11

I think this is one of my favorite pages. :) Love the Foldover. It’s just a fun way to extend your journaling and add a little flair.

florida-12

Adding receipts with dates and locations on it is the perfect ephemera for any album. Wrapping it around gives ya a two-fer accent.  Sweet.
florida-13

Like I said, it was all about the page content and what I could do to make things easy…most of the time, anyway. ;) So I used another Teresa Collins card–this time a 4×6 one–and folded it to make this page.
florida-14

And then on the flip side, I wrote journaling and included a tag from Tiny Details that I already had printed. It just happened to fit perfectly there. I also cut the right page using a card from Beautiful Somewhere. I love open-space cards!

florida-21

Another page modified from a card in the Beautiful Somewhere kit. Makes a great statement page all on its own.

florida-16

I did add a Freckled Fawn star paper clip and arrow washi tape after I came home…because…well…how could I not? And I loved the Teresa Collins glittery heart.

florida-17

I did want to include a few extra photos, so I used these 4×4 page We R Memory Keepers page protectors along with a Snapshots #3 template. Did I say I looooove that kit? ;)

florida-18

And then last, but not least, these Studio Calico enamel dots were the perfect accent to bring along–and the perfect size to punch holes in and keep in my album.

I didn’t necessarily keep the album in its original order. I switched pages around as I needed. Using rings–something changeable–made this kind of project so much easier to do. I also added a few items or photos at home too. Just some finishing touches and all.

Love it for its simplicity. Looks like I spent a lot of time making it, but the trick is to let the pages do all the work. ;)

This Is Going To Be Fantastic

[ DesignsJust Because (happy) / About Town (…fantastic) / This Everything (flower) ]

I loooove the super large phrase!
It’s just ever-so dreamy.

Here’s what Laura has to say:

I can count the number of 8.5×11 layouts I’ve created in my 20+ years of scrapbooking on one hand. But when I saw the “this is going to be fantastic” cut file in Kerri’s About Town kit, it inspired me to switch things up from my normal 12×12 layouts and create an 8.5×11 spread. I wanted my “this is going to be fantastic” piece to fill up one full page, so I cut it from white cardstock, added a 6×6 piece of patterned paper behind the cut out words, and then matted the entire piece on blue star patterned paper. I die cut 14 flowers from white cardstock as well, and adhered them around the edge of a sheet of white cardstock (trimming off any excess hanging off the edges) before misting the entire background and machine stitching around the edges.

I took these photos of my oldest daughter, Alyssa, while she was home on winter break after her first semester of college. I love hearing her talk about college life and how much she loves it there. “Happy” is the word I would use to describe her feelings about college, so I die cut the word “happy” from Kerri’s Just Because kit, from both white cardstock and the same blue star patterned paper I used on the second page. I wrote my journaling based off a lot of what she’s told me about the experience so far and the transition from living at home to living in the dorms. I think the “this is going to be fantastic” sums up her feelings for the rest of her college experience.

fantastic, i tell ya.

Snapshots #3 Is Here!

February 17th, 2015|photo templates|

Each time I use my cute little Epson Charm printer with multiple photos, I wish and wish I would just make some 4×6 photo templates to make life so much easier.

Well folks, it is done and here it is!

snapshots-3

These are all 4×6 photo templates. Some are made for putting multiples on a page and some are made for that ‘instax’ look. There are some that have the usual frame accompaniment. And on the ‘polaroid’ style, there are round and straight corner templates to make it all a piece of cake. (Note: You can increase the size of the template, but do it before you put in your photos.)

When you pull up–what I’m calling–the ‘insta’ frames, you’ll see there are some crosshairs in the file. Little lines made in Photoshop/Elements just for a visual so that you can have a better reference when determining what your little photos will look like. They do not print.

snapshots-3-ps-example

Then, with a simple set cut–in this case–at the 3″ mark and 2″ mark, you get these fun little photos!

Photo templates take all the guess work out of cropping+placing. They are a scrapper’s BFF. If you’d like to learn more about them, check out the Tutorials/Photo Templates link in the menu above.

Say Yes To New Adventures

February 16th, 2015|everyday life|

If you follow me on Facebook, you’ll see that I updated my cover photo to this:

go album

I can’t help but feel that is my motto for the next couple months…

…in travel.

…in design.

…in business.

…in memory keeping.

I feel rejuvenated in my outlook of the future.

Excited.

The possibilities that are out there when you open your mind and follow your heart are incredible.

It’s good for the soul.

I also picked up one of these over the weekend.

tn-happiness

It’s a Midori Traveler’s Notebook.

I’d been eyeing it for some time.

thinking.
thinking.
thinking.

Oooh, I just knew there was some fun to be had with it. Then I saw that Marcy Penner got one and I thought heck, if she’s using it, it must be grand! :)

I plan on using it in its truest sense…for some travels. (And if any of you have any words of advice, like what pens are best, products, etc., please, I’d love to know what y’all are using out there.)

Part of my saying yes to new adventures in the ‘memory keeping’ and ‘travel’ categories.

I’m so excited to see where these next couple months will lead.

So my question to you is…

What have you recently said ‘yes’ to that has given you new life?

Now, in honor of my new adventurous spirit, I thought it only fitting to offer the Here There Everywhere class on sale.

Right now you can save 30% through the end of the month.

Just in time to get ‘er done before your summer travels come ’round. :) This baby is jam-packed with ideas–learning more about designing in Silhouette Studio.

New Kit: Finger Tabs

February 14th, 2015|printables, silhouette, tips and tricks|

I’ve been on a little ‘accent’ kick of late. I think that happens when you have an end goal in sight of something you’re wanting to do. (All will be revealed in good time. :) )

But that’s how these cute little babies came about…the Finger Tabs.

finger-tabs

finger-tab-web

These little fold-over gems are the perfect little accent to your page.
Print+cut a bunch just to have on hand.
And you can even create your own combinations like these:

finger-tab-combos

yeah. fun, right?

And now for a little ‘Did You Know’ moment for the day.

This kit comes in two color schemes–black and the multicolor that you see here.

But what if you want mix up your own color scheme or quickly change out the pink for a different color and then do your Print+Cut in Studio?

Well, in version 3 you can quickly select a fill or line by color and change it as you need!

Make sure it’s ungrouped to individual images, then choose Select By Color either from the pull-down menu or from the icon in the lower left. At which point you’ll get a sidebar menu that allows you to pick from the colors on your image. Looks like this:

finger-tab-silhouette

How sweet is that?

It makes modifying your Print+Cuts a breeze.

And when you’re done, you can add them to a photo, card, or your page.
Perhaps a little something like this:

Can’t wait to use these!

It's All About The Love, Baby.

February 13th, 2015|naomi atkins, pages|

This time of year I get to spend about three days focusing on love.
One day–on the 12th…yesterday–is spent focusing on this man of mine.

me and dan anniversary 27

Yesterday was pretty low-key. Had lunch at Outback and just spent some time together.
We’ve got some other fun plans coming up that funds need to go to. ;)

And then two days later–tomorrow–I get to celebrate my family with love.

I used to buy some little ‘love’ memento.
Then as they got older, I went to Valentine sugar cookies from the bakery.
But this year they are watching their girlish figures.
What traditions do you have for this day?

Today Miss Naomi is expressing love for her daughter through paper+glitter.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with love, whether you’re surrounded by family or truly pampering yourself and loving yourself…because that is just as important–to really love who you are and take time for yourself.
