My Favorite Things: Hair Care

Okay, so ‘hair care’ is not a usual subject ’round these parts. But after spending a few days in Florida, I felt it just had to be shared.

I have naturally curly hair. It’s not as curly as Jordan’s, which can be worn with such gorgeousness, but it exists greatly. I’ve been to many a-beaches and humid cities in my time and the result has always been the same.

I can literally feel the frizz + curl set in.

And I’m here to tell ya….it ain’t pretty folks. Hats are a must.

My husband, who rarely says anything about my appearance, told me one time in Rome, Italy years ago, ‘You’re hair. It ain’t lookin’ so good.’ Curse that humidity and my curly hair! Of course it was shorter and styled differently, so that really compounded things.

But a few months ago, my sweet hairstylist and friend of 15 or so years quit and had a baby. Happy for her, sadness for me. So I had to find a new one and ended up going to someone I’ve known pretty much her whole life…like since she was two. She lived across the street and she and Kass were BFFs growing up. I’ve used a few different ‘straight’ products, but she introduced me to this amazing stuff.

This seriously is the best stuff…ever. I’ve never had a product that could keep that frizz and curl at bay. I’m in love with Pureology’s Colour Stylist Antisplit Blowdry Styling Cream. It’s a little expensive, but a little goes a long way. As in, I bought this four or so months ago and I’ve used maybe 1/4-1/3 of it. Totally worth it!

Our time in Florida was pretty much by the ocean–including our hotel. And not only that, every day was pretty much windy–as in, I often couldn’t see because my hair was always in my face. I didn’t want it in a ponytail either because then my ears would be cold. Yes, that wind coming by the sea made it quite chilly in certain parts of the day.

But rather than turning into a curly frizz ball, this is what I looked like much of the time…and that’s a rather mild wind-blown moment.

the hair
This was just one of the windy days down on the beach and there’s not a frizz in sight! Of course, I couldn’t see anything with that wind whipping my hair around all willy nilly, but I had to have proof to myself that yes, this is one fan-freakin’-tasic product!

I guess the truest test will be when heat and humidity rear its ugly head (not in Utah though), but I’ve been enjoying the smoother side of life for a few months now and it’s been wonderful!

I think it’ll be ‘smooth sailing’ from now on. :)

ETA: You only need about a dime size amount, depending on your hair length. Also, I’ll blow out my bangs first with a round brush and then with the hair dryer blowing from above, I’ll brush them down to the left and then down and over to the right and repeat that a few times. It helps with making them straighter.

Then I clip up the top half of my hair and dry the bottom half of my hair with a blow dryer and round brush. I don’t go for perfection because then I’ll use a straightener. After quickly running the straightener through, I take the clip out of the top, blow dry with a round brush, and then straighten that with the straightener. It really doesn’t take me a lot of time because the combination of the round brush and  quickly running the straightener through makes it pretty darn straight. I used to round brush my hair straight all the time. I had a hard time using the straightener and having it look good. But with this new product, the straightener works really well.

That sounds great! Will have to give it a try!! I’ll NEVER forget the time we had gone to Fl for a wedding-and I had a new do- longer in the front and shorter in back. My husband said (with my frizz!) that I looked like I had “puppy dog ears!” !!!…I kept hearing that all night while trying to sleep-and couldn’t get to a salon fast enough the next day-thank goodness for my flat iron and product! Sure does make a difference on us curly heads!!!

Thank you. I never can find anything for the days I want to be straight and not curly. So I shall give this a try. Now I have some advice for you. I have naturally curly hair as well but without the right cut and products I have a hot mess of between curly and straight that isn’t pretty. I get my hair razor cut which I suspect makes the ends a tad more jagged and somehow that bring out the curl. But without the right products I look like a bad 80’s chick. Deva Curl will change your life and probably your daughter’s as well. I also twist my hair into ringlets when it is wet and then sorta run my hands through it as it dries to keep it curly without the ringlets being so perfect. Anyway, can’t wait to try the straightening stuff cuz one days I love to straighten my hair and if it is even remotely humid I end up with weird curls near the hairline and everything else straight. Not looking so good.

I laughed out loud when I read the comment your husband made about your hair — he must know my husband!! I have just enough wave in my hair to make it frizzy so I will try this stuff. I recently tried Wen conditioning cleanser – which made a huge difference in my frizz factor. Pricey also but I love the way it makes my hair feel.
    Thanks for the fun post!

Thank you for sharing. It is so hard to find good products to control frizz. I am looking forward to checking this out.

Oh la la! Look at that fabulous hair! I have tried so many different types of hair conditioners to control frizz only to have disappointing results. This one works. Thank you so much for sharing this!

Yay! I’m so glad it works for you too! I can’t believe how much I love it. I really want to test it in a summer humidity sometime–like what you get in the south or east…but I really don’t fancy going ANYWHERE when it’s hot AND humid. ;) We’ll see if the opportunity ever presents itself.
